Welcome
The Newtown Creek BOA is a community-based economic development planning process focused on the cleanup and redevelopment of contaminated sites along Newtown Creek. The objective of the BOA is to create a 21st Century approach to enhancing and reutilizing sites within one of New York City’s most important maritime industrial areas. The Newtown Creek BOA will focus on preserving industry, cultivating new industrial uses, exploring opportunities for new infrastructure, increasing waterfront access and open space, and enhancing the interconnections between those who live and work near the Creek. The planning process will encompass land use and real estate analysis, urban design, social and demographic trends, business and labor trends, site contamination, transportation and infrastructure. While the BOA will not directly address water quality issues, it will work to place brownfield redevelopment in the context of existing and proposed water cleanup efforts, including the federal Superfund designation.
The Newtown Creek Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) Nomination Study is a joint initiative of the Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center (GMDC), Riverkeeper and the Newtown Creek Alliance.
